Coffee enemas
Coffee Enemas 101:
Coffee Enema History
Below you will find various blurbs & links discussing different aspects of the coffee enema – from how it works, who can benefit from them, how to make them, and commonly made mistakes. If you have questions, please ask us--------------------------------------------------------
Enemas are one of the oldest medical treatments known to man. The oldest known medical text, the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus (1,500 B.C.), records the use of enemas. Enemas were in use throughout the ancient world in Samaria, Babylonia, India, Greece, Africa and China. Greek literature is filled with references of the therapeutic use of enemas. American Indians, as well as pre-Columbian South Americans crafted enema bags from animal bladders, latex and bones.
Dr. Peter Lechner
The purpose of the coffee enema is to support the liver in eliminating toxins and to cleanse the blood. In 1984 Dr. Peter Lechner from Graz, Austria stated, “Coffee enemas have a definite effect on the colon which can be observed with an endoscope. Wattenberg and co-workers were able to provide in 1981 that the palmitic acid found in coffee promotes the activity of glutathione S-transferase and other ligands by manifold times above the norm. It is this enzyme group which is responsible primarily for the conjugation of free electrophile radicals which the gallbladder will then release.”
Dr. Max Gerson
Coffee enemas appeared in the medical literature at least as early as 1917 and remained in the Merck Manual until 1972. German scientists discovered that coffee was able to open the bile ducts and increase the production of bile by the liver. Max Gerson, M.D. began using coffee enemas with his patients suffering from tuberculosis and then later, with his cancer patients.
Dr. Gerson found that the physical root causes of cancer in his patients were toxicity and nutritional deficiency. He used raw fresh juices and raw liver to address nutritional deficiencies as well as assist in cleansing the kidneys. As toxins were forced out of the tissues, it became necessary to support the liver in its ability to adequately eliminate toxins. Dr. Gerson understood that the liver becomes overburdened by the continuous release of toxins and that it was necessary to find proper support for detoxification. He found that detoxification could best be facilitated through the caffeine in coffee, absorbed from the descending colon via the hemorrhoidal vein, which carries the caffeine to the portal vein and the liver. The caffeine stimulates the liver and biliary ducts to open for release of waste products and toxins into the intestinal tract for excretion.
Dr. William Kelley
Later, Dr. William Kelley, learning from Dr. Gerson, implemented the use of coffee enemas first with himself during his two year battle with pancreatic cancer starting in 1969, and then with his cancer patients until his passing in 2006. Both doctors noted remarkable healing in those patients using coffee enemas.
The Purpose
Keep in mind that coffee enemas are given for the purpose of detoxification of the liver and blood, not for elimination of the bowels. The substances found in coffee, kahweol and cafestol palmitate, promote the activity of a key enzyme system, glutathione S-transferase, above the norm. This system detoxifies a vast array of electrophiles from the bloodstream and, according to Gar Hildenbrand of the Gerson Institute, “must be regarded as an important mechanism for carcinogen detoxification.” This enzyme group is responsible for neutralizing free radicals. It is believed that kahweol and cafestol palmitate increase the liver’s production of glutathione by as much as 700%.
“In addition, theophylline and theobromine (two other chemicals in coffee) dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut; the palmitates enhance the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals from the serum; and the fluid of the enema then stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and the transit of diluted toxic bile from the duodenum and out the rectum.” (Ralph Moss, The Royal Enema)

Organic Coffee
When choosing your coffee, it must always be ORGANIC and CAFFEINATED!
We suggest a light roast coffee but a Medium Roast can work as well, some just find it harder to keep in longer. IT MUST BE Unflavored, Regular, not Instant.
If you cannot find coffee locally, you can purchase it online!
Our recommendations can be found here
The Recipe
The traditional Gerson-style recipe calls for 3Tbs. ground coffee in 32 ounces of water (filtered or
distilled). You will add your water to a non-aluminum pot on the stove (ie. glass or stainless steel). Bring to a boil, add your coffee and boil for 3 minutes. Reduce heat, and let it simmer for 15 minutes (covered). Remove from heat, and let it cool to body temperature (I prefer 108 degrees). Strain it with a fine-mesh or cloth-lined strainer. Do not use a paper filter. Check the amount of solution that is left after straining and, if needed, replace the water that has boiled away to restore it to 32 ounces. Pour the strained solution into your reusable enema kit.
Note: If you’re concerned about the response your body may have to the caffeine, you may use less coffee to begin with and progressively increase the amount when you become comfortable.*the caffeine doesn’t affect you as a stimulant, it dilates your blood vessels and you feel energized.
Time-Saving Tip: If you're crunched for time and using coffee enemas frequently, you can make a coffee concentrate,2 quarts to 3/4 cup grounds which makes 4 batches and can be stored on the COUNTER for 2 days. When ready to make an enema, add 16 ounces of the concentrate with 16 ounces of warm/hot water, and you're ready to go! Traveling? Grab a fleet enema and stop by 7-11 and grab some coffee! Also great alternative for those crunched for time!!
Now What?
Lubricate the end of the catheter/speculum and your rectum with a non-toxic lubricant (ie. organic coconut oil, shea butter). We suggest using a long, thin flexible catheter, which can be seen & purchased at link above - using this catheter, you can safely insert it AT LEAST 6 - 8 inches into the rectum. It’s a safe and comfortable choice! If you’re using a thicker, inflexible speculum, it usually will not allow you to insert more than 2-3 inches. And don’t try too!! Ask me about the banana!
Place your enema bucket or bag 18-24 inches above where you will be lying down for your enema. This could mean setting it on the toilet or hanging it from a cabinet with a hook. Put it in a place where it is least likely to be knocked over or spilt.
After allowing the coffee solution to enter your colon ( should be a slow flow and take between 12-14 minutes to get the full 32 ounces in, note the faster it goes in, the faster it goes out), you will remain lying down on your right side or back; if it gets hard to contain, sway legs back and forth, retaining the solution for 15 minutes. It may be difficult to retain for the full 15 minutes – always keep in close distance of the toilet!
Need Some Help?
If you have trouble releasing your bowel movements, with an enema or without, start your day, using a fleet suppository before you do the enema to release a bowel movement.
You can buy these here Other Tools — The PooRu.com
**Once you add it to the cart select Fleet suppository’s.
Common Mistakes & What Can Go Wrong:
Be sure to strain your coffee well so the granules don’t get stuck in the tube.
Start with 16 ounces instead of 32 ounces if you’re just getting started. Be sure to have some wipes or some thing similar near the toilet and be sure to clean underneath the toilet seat when you’re finished. Don’t be surprised if you don’t make it to the toilet, and have an accident on the floor. This is extremely common, I also highly suggest that you have some thing for poking around once you start seeing parasites in the toilet so you can get a clear view and a photo to send to your person helping you.
Cleaning Up
When you’ve completed your enema, it’s important to clean your kit for next time! Do not use harsh chemicals, as they are contradictory to the healing process. They can leave behind trace residues that may end up going into your body during your enema. Using hot water & castile soap, thoroughly wash & rinse out your kit (tubing and all). After every 2-3 uses, run Hydrogen Peroxide through your kit. You can also add water and white vinegar to your kit (plus tubing), close the clamp, and allow it to soak overnight. Some other non- toxic ways to safely clean your kit include: baking soda & white vinegar, grapefruit seed extract, chlorine dioxide, and iodine.
Replenishing Minerals/Electrolytes
People doing the complete Gerson Therapy are suggested to drink fresh, organic juices daily. Suggested is 24oz. of juice per coffee enema, to nourish the body with live enzymes and nutrients. The juices used are: green, carrot, carrot/apple, and orange or grapefruit juices. If you’re using coffee enemas separate from the Gerson Therapy, there are some other ways to replenish electrolytes such as: Coconut water, real bone broth, additional fresh juices, citrus fruits, powdered juices here.

Why Is the Liver So Important?
The liver is the most hard-working organ in the human body. It performs over 500 functions that are vital to life. It plays an important role in digestion (breaking nutrients down) and assimilation (building up body tissues). The liver is one of the most important organs in the body when it comes to detoxifying or getting rid of foreign substances or toxins, especially from the gut.
Signs & Symptoms of Liver Troubles
Liver problems, imbalances or disorders have been shown in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to correspond with changes in vision, as the sensory organ associated with the liver is the eyes. Emotionally, the liver is negatively associated with anger and frustration, but can also be positively associated with generosity. Angry feelings, foul odors and shouting sounds directly stimulate the liver. The basic taste corresponding to the liver in TCM is sour, and its sensitive climate condition is wind. A windy day will cause liver qi flow to become stagnant and unbalanced, producing symptoms of dizziness and vertigo. Depression is always associated with liver qi stasis. When the liver is hyperactive, it “overworks” and produces liver “heat.” Liver heat can then cause increased blood pressure, hot flashes and migraine headaches. Liver heat most frequently manifests as fissures and cracks on the surface of the right side of the posterior tongue along its edge. In extreme cases, such as cancer, the manifestations of liver heat can include purplish discoloration and lesions on the tongue. It can also be apparent as redness on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet.
On the face, the liver is frequently reflected by the condition of the cheeks, known in Western medicine as rosacea, especially on the left side of the face.
Alcoholism results in liver irritation, producing liver heat that can also clinically manifest as rosacea. According to TCM, every organ controls a specific tissue of the human body. The finger and toe nails present the main clinical manifestations of the liver. If the liver is constantly irritated, it is reflected by unhealthy, thick nails with lines or bumps. Bumpy nails reveal that the liver qi is stagnant. A lined nail that peels easily shows that the liver qi is deficient. Nails with thick lines indicate that there is excess “heat” in the liver. Therefore, in TCM, physiological or pathological disorders of the liver can be detected and diagnosed by observing external manifestations of the internal disturbance.
I highly recommend this liver supplement to increase bile releases during your protocol:

Caution: Coffee Enemas and Chemotherapy
While the complete Gerson Therapy does include coffee enemas for patients who have been pre- treated with chemotherapy, they do so at a cautious pace.
‘For patients who have been pretreated with chemotherapy, the enema schedule is reduced. It has become evident that such patients must be detoxified more slowly and cautiously so as not to release all the remaining toxic chemotherapy residues too rapidly, which would add up to a dangerous overdose. We have seen a number of such patients see long-term satisfactory recoveries, but the results are achieved more slowly. Also, since the body is much more toxic, owing to its load of synthetic chemicals, the results are also somewhat less reliable. The chemo-burdened patient excretes the toxic drugs still stored in his or her organism and suffers disturbances that are similar, though less severe, than the ones caused by the chemotherapy. They include some hair loss, nausea, mouth sores, pain, reduction in red and white blood corpuscle counts, weakness and change in the test results. Some patients can actually smell the chemicals being excreted through their skin. Often, the enema returns smells of chemicals. Such a six-month chemo reaction can last up to three weeks, after which time the patient is much improved. The chemo-caused symptoms clear, the blood picture improves once again, the tumors regress more rapidly, hair regrows and energy returns.’ Healing the Gerson Way
Note: The above excerpt is discussing a patient who is embarking on the complete Gerson Therapy, has been pretreated with chemo, and has active cancer, but it also applies to cancer-survivors who were treated with chemotherapy in the past.
What is the 3-Minute Cycle?
‘It is important to realize that, while the person is holding the coffee enema in his or her colon for the suggested 12 to 15 minutes, the body’s entire blood supply passes through the liver every three minutes (ie. four to five times in all), carrying poisons picked up from the tissues. These are then released Through the bile ducts due to the stimulation of the caffeine. However, in order to leave the body, these toxins still have to travel through the small intestine (25 to 27 feet), through the colon (4 to 5 feet) and out via the rectum and the anus. Naturally, on this long trip, a small amount of the released toxins is reabsorbed into the system and can cause the patient discomfort, especially in the early phase of the therapy, when detoxification has only just started.' Healing the Gerson Way (Ch. 13)
“The Gallbladder Squirt”
Sometimes you will hear or feel a squirting out and emptying of the gallbladder (gallstones, bile) during a coffee enema. We call it the Gallbladder Squirt! This occurs under the right rib cage, or sometimes more closely to the mid line.
‘If after a week of daily enemas you have never felt or heard the gall bladder release, you should consider making the coffee stronger, going up in 1/2 Tablespoon increments per quart, not exceeding 6 Tablespoons total.
